Texans blast Billies in extra-inning finale

The Wimberley Texans baseball team traveled to Fredericksburg on Friday, April 30 to take on the
Billies in the season finale. The fans were treated to some action packed baseball during a 15-7
extra-inning victory by the Texans. The game was tied 7-7 at the end of the 7th inning. However, the
Texans exploded for 8 runs in the top of the 8th inning to put the game out of reach. Pitcher Caleb
Wilson, who had come on in relief in the 6th inning, then recorded 2 strikeouts and induced a ground
out in the bottom half of the inning to seal the victory.

The Texans had tremendous offensive production in the game, recording 12 hits. In fact, the Texans
were able to chase the ace of the Billies pitching staff from the mound in the 5th inning. The Texans
amassed a team batting average of .353 and a team on base percentage of .538 in the game.

Josh Gray was 2 for 3 with a ground rule double, 2 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 3 RBI's, and 1 run scored.
Brennen Blakemore was 3 for 6 with a triple, 5 RBI's, and 1 run scored. Tug McRoberts was 1 for 3 with
1 walk, 2 intentional walks, and 1 run scored. Dustin English was 0 for 4 with a sacrifice fly, a hit by the
pitch, 1 RBI, 2 stolen bases, and 1 run scored. Hunter Wright was 1 for 4 with 2 walks, 1 stolen base,
and 2 runs scored. Caleb Wilson was 1 for 4 with a double, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by the pitch, and 2
RBI's.  Lance Yeates was 2 for 3 with 2 walks, a sacrifice bunt, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Travis Payton
was 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Carson Doty was 1 for 1 with 3 walks, a sacrifice fly, 1 RBI,
and 2 runs scored. Riley Stephens contributed a stolen base and 1 run scored while pinch running for
Lance Yeates in the 8th inning. Ryan Barroso also scored a run as a courtesy runner for pitcher Caleb
Wilson in the 8th inning.

The Texans defense was somewhat sloppy at times, but ultimately clamped down for the win. Caleb
Wilson made 2 catches in left field and started a well-executed 1-6-3 double play from the pitcher's
mound. Dustin English had 1 really nice assist from the pitcher's mound. Hunter Wright had 9 put outs
at 1st base, including an "over the fence" catch near the dug out and a leaping stab of a screaming,
rising line drive in the 7th inning. Hunter Burttschelle contributed an assist on a ground ball in the 3rd
inning from 2nd base. Dylan Matlock also contributed an assist from 2nd base in the 6th inning.
Shortstop Brennen Blakemore recorded 4 assists and 1 put out, to include turning a beautiful double
play in the 6th inning. Tug McRoberts was busy in the early going, catching 3 fly balls in center field.
Lance Yeates caught a pop up on the run in right field and later made a nice throw home on a base hit
near the line to hold the runner at 3rd base. Catcher Josh Gray also contributed a solid performance
behind the dish.

The Texans wrapped up their season with an overall record of 18-8 and a district record of 5-5. The
Texans barely missed the playoffs this year by virtue of three close, final inning district losses. The
Texans will be a team to be reckoned with in District 30-3A next year as they are only graduating two
seniors, Caleb Wilson and Dustin English. The experience this young team gained this year should
serve them well in their 2011 campaign. The Texans were managed by Dane Saucier. The assistant
coaches were Jerod Fikac, Michael Eckert, and Willie Medlock.

Junior Varsity-District Tournament Finals

The JV Texans played in the District 30-3A Tournament Championship on Saturday, April 24. The
Texans played the Boerne Greyhounds. The Texans came away with a 2-1 victory in a game that was
not decided until the final out. In fact, the Greyhounds loaded the bases in the top of the 7th inning with
only one out. However, pitcher Tristan Huey struck out the next batter and then induced a ground ball
out on the final batter. The ground ball was hit sharply to shortstop Kyle Terrio, who made a nice play
to knock it down and then toss it to Justin McMillan at 2nd base just ahead of the base runner for the
final out and the tournament championship.

Tristan Huey pitched a complete 7-inning game allowing only one run. Reed Jones and Tristan Huey
both came up with big hits to score runs in the game. Justin McMillan started things off in the 1st
inning for the Texans with a base hit and a stolen base. He was later driven in by a Tristan Huey base
hit down the first base line.

Pitcher Tristan Huey got strong support from the Texans defense. Reed Jones had a strong game at
catcher. He corralled two difficult pop ups behind the plate near the backstop and tagged out a base
runner at the plate for critical put outs in the game. Ryan Barroso made some important catches in
right field, including a sharply hit line drive in the last inning with runners at 2nd base and 3rd base.
Barroso's play on the ball kept the runners from advancing to tie the game and provided the Texans
with that all important first out in the troublesome last inning.

Center Fielder Ian Hooper  contributed some strong catches in very blustery wind conditions. Justin
McMillan played well at 2nd base with several assists and the final put out. In addition, Shane Clement
played very well at 1st base. He made a great decision on a ball hit to him at first base with a runner on
3rd base. Instead of attempting to put out the runner at 1st base, Clement immediately came up
throwing to cut down the runner at home plate. His decision would lead to another critical out and
denied the Greyhounds a much needed run in the hotly contested game. Colton Lewis  contributed an
assist from 3rd base and Zach Caldwell recorded another put out in left field.

The Texans were well coached by Michael Eckert and Willie Medlock and had a great season. The
Texans overall record was 20-3. The Texans were 13-2 against district competition and won the season
ending district tournament.

Varsity-Bandera

The varsity hosted the Bandera Bulldogs on Friday, April 23. The Texans came out on the short end of
a 4-2 contest. The Texans jumped out to a first inning lead when Josh Gray hit a lead off home run to
start the game. Brennen Blakemore followed that up with a base hit. Tug McRoberts would later drive in
Blakemore with a base hit to give the Texans a 2-0 lead. The Texans got sloppy on defense later in the
game. In fact, 4 Texans errors in the field led to all of the Bulldogs runs and allowed the game to get
away from the Texans.

The Texans are 17-7 on the season and 4-5 in District 30-3A play. The Texans will wrap up their season
on Friday, April 30 with a trip to Fredericksburg to take on the Billies.

Junior Varsity-District Tournament

The junior varsity traveled to Fredericksburg on Thursday, April 22 to play the first round of the JV
District Tournament. The Texans squared off against the Ingram Warriors in the first game and
prevailed by a score of 14-4. The Texans then took on the Fredericksburg Billies in the second game
and came away with a hard fought 9-5 victory. The Texans scored 5 runs in the last two innings to salt
away the victory and move on to the Championship Game on Saturday, April 24 at Canyon Lake High
School.

Boerne, Bandera, and Canyon Lake played at Canyon Lake High School on Thursday, April 22 to
determine the seedings for the games on Thursday. The outcome of those games are unknown at this
time so we do not know the opponent for the Texans on Saturday at this time.

Varsity-Canyon Lake

The Texans traveled to Fischer to play the Canyon Lake hawks in an important district game. The game
was not decided until the bottom of the 7th inning when a bases loaded sacrifice fly pushed the winning
run across for Canyon Lake giving them a 4-3 victory. The Texans are now 17-7 on the season and 4-4
in District 30-3A play.

Tug McRoberts and Carson Doty contributed some offensive fireworks to the Texans'  cause  by hitting
triples. Brennen Blakemore had a solid game at shortstop with 1 putout and 3 assists. Caleb Wilson
ably manned left field by recording 3 put outs. Tug McRoberts played well in center field with 2 put outs.

Other District 30-3A action saw Boerne defeat Ingram and Fredericksburg take down Bandera 11-7. The
current district standings are as follows:

Fredericksburg        6-2
Boerne                     6-2
Canyon Lake            5-3
Wimberley                4-4
Bandera                   3-5
Ingram                     0-8

The Texans will play a do or die game against the Bandera Bulldogs on Friday, April 23 in Wimberley.
The Texans will then travel to Fredericksburg on Friday, April 30 to wrap up the regular season. If the
Texans are able to win these two contest they could well be in the thick of the playoff hunt depending
on what happens with Boerne v Fredericksburg and Boerne v Canyon Lake in the coming weeks.
