Texans run out of playoff magic
The varsity football team faced the Graham Steers in the Region I Championship game in Waco on Friday, 12-4-
09. The Graham Steers came out of the gate fast to build an early lead en route to a 48-7 victory over the Texans.
While the quarterfinal loss to Graham was disappointing, the Texans are to be commended on a truly successful
season. Only a few Wimberley football teams have made it to the 4th round of the playoffs and it is a significant
accomplishment. The Texans players and coaches are to be congratulated for rising from the proverbial ashes of
a 1-3 start to treat the community to an entertaining string of exciting wins in both district and playoff
competition.
The community bids a fond farewell to following seniors who finished their high school football careers in style
by winning the District 8-3A crown and making it to the Division II, Region I Championship game: Trey Bell,
Dayton Biggs, Brooks Blakemore, Chezz Bornemann, Chase Brown, Matt Dragowetz, Oscar Flores, Steven
Hough, Clifford Hunter, Drew Kutz, Mason Marburger, Rolando Mendoza, Toby Pehl, Dustin Reinecke, Zach
Stewart, Jackson Wallace, Charlie Will Tuttle, and Justin "JJ" Young.
JV Texans hobble the Billies in season finale
The junior varsity football team hosted the Fredericksburg Billies on Thursday, November 5 and came away with
a 30-6 victory. The Texans pretty much dominated the game from wire to wire. The Texans offense scored on its
first 3 possessions to take the starch out of the Billies. In addition, the defense manhandled Fredericksburg for
the majority of the game.
The Texans amassed 271 yards of total offense to the Billies’ 105 yards of total offense. The Billies gained 70 of
those yards in a third quarter drive when the game was pretty well out of reach. Otherwise, the Texans defense
did not allow another meaningful offensive possession by Fredericksburg.
The Texans defense quickly shut the Billies down on the first series, forcing a punt after 3 plays. Outside
linebacker Blake Guidry set the tone for the game by dropping the ball carrier for a 5-yard loss on the first play
from scrimmage. Jon Holter then sparked the Texans offense when he returned the punt 29 yards to the Billies
27-yard line.
Quarterback Josh Gray started the scoring for the Texans with a 5-yard outside run where he picked up a
“pancake” block from guard David Carrillo and good seal blocks from receivers Riley Oldmixon and Riley
Stephens. Running back Blake Guidry ran a successful sweep for the 2-point conversion and the Texans led 8-0
at the 5:06 mark of the 1st quarter. Another highlight of the drive was a 22-yard run by running back Tug
McRoberts behind good blocks from Blake Guidry, tackle Joe Schindler and receiver Jon Holter.
The Billies’ next drive resulted in another punt after defensive end Everett Armstrong dropped the quarterback
for a 6-yard loss on 3rd down. The Texans took over possession of the ball at the Billies 46-yard line after the
punt. Tug McRoberts later extended the Texans lead with an 11-yard touchdown run. He got good blocks on the
play from Riley Oldmixon, Riley Stephens and David Carrillo. Josh Gray then carried the ball in for the 2-point
conversion and the Texans led 16-0 at the 8:20 mark of the 2nd quarter. Other highlights of the drive included a
16-yard scamper by Josh Gray and a 10-yard run by Blake Guidry.
The Texans defense again stopped the Billies on the next drive when outside linebacker Riley Stephens
recovered a fumble at the Texans 35-yard line. Inside linebacker Garrett Puckorious and Everett Armstrong
combined efforts to force the fumble after a 2-yard gain.
The Texans offense then embarked on an 11-play, 65-yard scoring drive that culminated with a Josh Gray 5-yard
touchdown run behind good blocks from David Carrillo, Riley Oldmixon, and Riley Stephens. The 2-point
conversion run came up just short and the Texans had increased their lead to 22-0 with 2:40 left in the half.
Another highlight of the drive was a 10-yard run by Josh Gray on 4th down behind great blocks from Blake
Guidry, Joe Schindler, and David Carrillo.
The Texans defense subsequently forced a quick 3 and out from the Billies offense. Everett Armstrong again
dropped the ball carrier in the backfield for a 2-yard loss during this defensive stand. The Billlies then tried to
strike through the air but cornerback Cade Davis had tight coverage forcing an incompletion. The Texans offense
took over and ran out the time in the first half with a 22-0 lead.
The Texans got the ball to start the 2nd half and drove the ball to the Billies 37-yard line. However, a fumble on
the next play ended the possession. A highlight of the drive was a 15-yard reverse by Tug McRoberts on a 3rd
down and 7. McRoberts picked up good blocks on the play from David Carrillo and Riley Oldmixon.
The Billies then put together a 5-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that encompassed runs up the middle for 25 and
30 yards respectively. The Billies attempted to pass for the 2-point conversion but safety Bubba Robinson
intercepted the ball and returned it to the 45-yard line.
The Texans started the next drive at their 32-yard line after the kickoff. The Texans proceeded to march 68 yards
in 10 plays to salt the game away. Josh Gray scored his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 2 yard run up the middle
behind a good block from David Carrillo. Josh Gray then connected with Riley Oldmixon on a slant route for the 2-
point conversion and the new score was 30-6 Texans with 6:20 left in the game. Other highlights of the drive
included a Tug McRoberts 26-yard reverse with great blocking by Blake Guidry, David Carrillo, Everett
Armstrong, Riley Oldmixon, and Riley Stephens. Josh Gray also completed a 7-yard pass to Riley Stephens in
the flats. Tug McRoberts delivered a text book “ear hole” block to allow Stephens to turn the corner and move
downfield.
The Billies set up shop at their 29-yard line after a sure-tackling Angelo Panayiotou cut down the kickoff return
man in full stride. The Billies fumbled on the ensuing running play and defensive end Riley Oldmixon recovered
the loose ball at the Billies 30-yard line.
The Texans then drove to the Billies 11-yard line where they turned the ball over on downs. The Texans
previously attained a 1st down when Josh Gray passed the ball to receiver Ryan Porter for 9 yards on 4th down
and 8.
The Billies ran 3 plays to burn off the remaining time and the Texas wrapped up their season with a 30-6 victory.
The offense accumulated 241 rushing yards. Josh Gray rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries for a 5. 5 yard average.
Blake Guidry rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries for a 5.9 yard average. Tug McRoberts rushed for 73 yards on 7
carries for a 10.4 yard average. Bubba Robinson rushed for 4 yards on 2 carries. Grayson Moore rushed for 4
yards on 3 carries. Tyler Mahaney had 1 carry for no gain. The offensive line play of Joe Schindler, David Carrillo,
Bryce Wegmiller, Everett Armstrong, and Bradley Rodriguez was stellar and controlled the line of scrimmage
throughout the contest.
Josh Gray completed 5 of 13 passes for 30 yards and 1 PAT. Tug McRoberts caught 2 passes for 11 yards. Ryan
Porter caught 1 pass for 9 yards. Riley Stephens caught 1 pass for 7 yards. Riley Oldmixon caught 1 pass for 3
yards and a PAT.
The junior varsity had a successful year with a 7-2-1 record. The future looks bright indeed for the Texans varsity
football program. Coaches Kip Holt, Doug Warren, Dane Saucier, Bill Crisp, and Jeff McDorman are to be
commended for a job well done.
