Texan Men's Basketball TEXANS BEST THE BILLIES 61-59 Wimberley last played the Billies in Fredericksburg on Jan 3rd and the Texans won a tough one 49-42, so when the Texans hosted Fredericksburg on Jan 27 the Billies had revenge on their minds. They came out fast & strong and took the Texans by surprise, racking up an early 21-14 lead. The 2nd quarter saw Wimberley fight hard and cut into Fredericksburg's lead as both defenses played tough. Wimberley only scored 9 points and held the Billies to 6. The first half ended with Wimberley trailing 23-27. It was a tough game for the referees with bad calls going both ways and both teams heading to the free throw line repeatedly. Missed Texan free throws and better success by the Billies kept Fredericksburg in the game. The 3rd quarter ended with the Billies holding a slight 39-36 lead. The 4th quarter continued the defensive battle with BIG baskets from Davis Holliman's 3-pointer and Hunter Burttschell's clutch free throws. A great defensive stop at the end of regulation put the game into overtime with 49 all. OT didn't start well for the Texans as they quickly fell behind by 5 points. Big baskets were needed and several players delivered. Tyler Nance hit a 3-pointer and 2 free throws. Free throws from Hunter Burttschell & Davis Holliman put the Texans up by 2. A foul by Wimberley put Fredericksburg on the line & their 2 free throws tied the game. The winning basket came from Seth Linker as he grabbed an offensive rebound & put it up with 4.88 seconds left. Scoring: Davis Holliman 20, Hunter Burttschell 10, Ian Hooper 8, Niko Alana 8, Tyler Nance 7, Christian Bilger 6, Taylor Robertson 2, Seth Linker 2.
Texan Soccer TEXAN SOCCER VS LEHMAN The Texan boys soccer team lost a close one on Friday January 27th to the Lehman Lobos by a score of 1-0. The Texans gave up the match’s lone goal off a free kick from outside the penalty area. Playing without three key starters due to injuries, the Texans put up a strong fight against the always challenging Lobos. The boys are now 4-1 in pre-district play and face Fredericksburg and San Marcos this week. The Texan girls soccer team lost on Friday January 27th to the Lehman Lady Lobos. The girls improved on many fronts at different times in the game but still fell 5-0 to Lehman. Up next for the Lady Texans, Fredericksburg and San Marcos.
Texan Tennis TEXAN TENNIS BACK IN ACTION! In the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day”, actor Bill Murray is stuck in a loop of repeating the same day over and over and over. For about 10 years it’s seemed like the WHS tennis team has been in a similar situation with Abilene Wylie’s team. The cast of characters have changed over the years but the story keeps repeating itself. Abilene Wylie has a great team. Wimberley plays them tough. Abilene Wylie still wins. Repeat. Year after year after year after……… So if you’ve read this somewhere before and you stop now ……………you’ll miss the names of this most recent set of Wimberley players who fought so hard and played so well in spite of another losing TEAM TENNIS match vs. Abilene Wylie. Yes – Abilene Wylie defeated Wimberley 18-1. Was it fun to get beat like that? NO. But Wimberley’s 6 seniors, 2 juniors, 6 sophomores and 3 freshmen played very good tennis. They battled hard and in several individual matches gave their opponents all they could handle. Daniel Donaldson picked up an exciting victory for Wimberley in an extra boys singles match. Aaron Willis won in boys singles for the Texans. Those young men deserve enormous credit for claiming a victory but a win is not the only thing indicative of good play. It’s also about the effort and Wimberley had that on each individual court. So read the rest of the Wimberley player names below and remember …….. Based on the fine play we saw on Saturday ………. they’ll be ready for Regional and State competition later in the Spring. Oh ---- and Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day” does eventually stop repeating the same day. Seniors – Hannah Whisenant, Anna Lindsey, Lizzy Lamb, Mason Stark, Aaron Willis, Michael Young Juniors – Aubry Ruckman, Landon O’Neal Sophomores – Amy Bell, Faith Stephens, Mesa Martorell, Clinton Quinn, Pierce Fulkerson, Daniel Donaldson Freshmen – Taylor Treadwell, Audrey Marlett, Sam San Marco
